Just remember that the Memorial Weekend holiday can be a bustling, busy time on the lake. Crowds can make being on the lake fun and social, but its good to remember safety!

Here’s a few simple reminders… though all apply, remember ‘stress-free’ rentals come with essential safety items such as life jackets.

Have the proper amount of life jackets on board.
Do not drink and drive.
Have an orange flag on board when towing.
Stock up on sunscreen.
Bring and drink lots of water.

Don't forget to fit man's best friend with a life jacket!

Don’t forget to fit man’s best friend with a life jacket!

Not only is safety important for keeping us alive and well, but it will also prevent any tickets from the lake patrol officers!

Let’s all just try and remember to be considerate and courteous. Use common sense. Follow posted rules and regulations.

So – No excuses! We’ll see you out on the water!

Get Your Boating Body Back

We’d like to point out that the following 5 tips all have a common thread with houseboating~

1) Get More Sleep Getting enough sleep aids in mental clarity, reduces the risk of diabetes and heart problems, and fights off depression. Sleep is also linked to the ease with which you lose weight and build muscle. In fact, people who sleep less than six hours per night also eat, on average, an additional 220 calories per day. What better way to do this than aboard a luxury houseboat floating on a peaceful lake?

2) Fill your plate with colorful vegetables
Try adding a new vegetable to your diet each week, trying something you’ve never tasted before at least once a month. Brightly colored, as well as dark green leafy vegetables are full of antioxidants and necessary vitamins.
What a pretty picture they’ll paint inside your houseboat full-sized refrigerator!

3) Avoid Processed Foods
You can easily chow down a bag of chips or a chocolate candy bar with 300 calories, but 300 calories is what’s in a lunch size 6-inch sub sandwich! Try to remove highly processed foods like frozen dinners and pre-packaged snack cakes.
Our houseboats are fully outfitted with kitchen galleys, and some gourmet galleys, to make your meal preparation easy and fun!

4)Cook at home (or aboard a boat) and have dinner around the table
Cooking provides a healthy option to fast food and highly processed foods while building life lasting memories. Taking some time to talk together as a family and create a healthy meal could provide you with a healthy stress relief alternative that you may have not expected. Every houseboats.com vessel features a community table for enjoying delicious meals prepared in the galley kitchen or BBQ.

5) Grab the Weights
When you do cardio, the calories you burn are a combination of fat and muscle. Weight training burns nearly twice as many calories as doing cardio at a slow, long pace. If you want the fastest results with less time in the gym, your best bet is to grab the weights.
Or rent a ski boat or wakeboard boat and get out on the lake; skiing and other watersports provide the exhilarating fun and exercise!

Boat Sales Rev Back to Life

12/27/12 Wall Street Journal

By JIM CARLTON

SAN FRANCISCO—Don Lorenz decided to hold off on splurging on a new boat until he was convinced the economy had stabilized.

The right moment came this summer, when the 63-year-old chief investment officer for a real-estate firm paid $75,000 for a 20-foot water-skiing boat for his family’s lake trips in Northern California.

“I wouldn’t have bought one earlier because the recession and uncertainty were severe,” said Mr. Lorenz, a resident of Menlo Park, Calif., who last bought a boat eight years ago and plans to keep using it, in addition to the new one. “I was trying to maintain my liquidity.”

What is Shasta Lake Houseboating all about?

Lovin’ Shasta

Shasta Lake is a magnificent body of water shrouded by a massive evergreen forest. This is the best of Mother Nature, raw and unspoiled, at your fingertips. Four rivers or “arms” merge together to create this man-made wonder: the Sacramento, McCloud, Squaw Creek and Pit. Each has its own personality and unique beauty.

Unlike anywhere on Earth

The scenery and views are endlessly breathtaking. Mt. Shasta rises majestically to the North and the Lassen Volcanic peaks to the East. Shasta Dam, the highest center spillway dam in the world, can be found at the Southwest corner of the lake. Shasta Caverns, a fascinating natural wonder that can only be reached from the lake, offers daily tours year round.

Watersport Haven

Shasta Lake offers countless coves for the ultimate watersport experience. Since the mountains create a constant windbreak, “glass” conditions are abundant. And with 365 miles of shoreline, finding your own private spot is easy. Summer days are almost guaranteed sunny and the average water temperature is a heavenly 76 degrees.

Epic Fishing

In the spring, before water temperatures have started to rise, anglers are drawn to Shasta for the great variety of fish species. Brown and rainbow trout and silver salmon can be caught from the bank or by trolling. Bass tournaments throughout the year attract fishermen from far and wide.

A myriad of hiking trails crisscross the rugged terrain surrounding the lake. Levels of difficulty range from casual walking paths to advanced trails for the serious hiker or mountain-biker.

Without a doubt, houseboating is the most relaxing way to explore Shasta Lake. All of the conveniences of home, the luxury of a yacht, the perfect ‘home base’ for your boats and waverunners, all  in the midst of the great outdoors, are what makes houseboating so attractive  to those looking to escape civilization without sacrificing comfort.

Shasta Lake is located in Northern California about four hours drive Northeast of the Bay Area, three hours North of Sacramento, off Interstate 5.

Be Your Own Captain!

Oftentimes, I’m reminded of how blessed we, who spend our days working on the water, truly are.  As one of our crew members often reminds me, “We walk on water 8 hours a day!”  We live and breathe everything houseboats.  We build them, repair them, drive them, and some of us live on them.  Not a summer days goes by that a happy customer doesn’t threaten to quit their job and join us on one of our marinas.  If you are one of those, either you already own a boat and are thinking of buying a houseboat, have considered buying one but weren’t sure where to start, or just someone who thinks it would be cool to getaway for weeks at a time and live-aboard a luxury houseboat, this is written with you in mind.

This year, we only have a few vessels for sale and you can see them here.  All of our boats are maintained at the highest standard as their appearance and functional use dictate our value.  You can trust that we take impeccable care of each houseboat as any issues we have with our boats cost us money if we can’t rent them.  Most of our boats are sold at or above market rate due to the quality of our maintenance.  Of course, any older houseboat generally requires more maintenance and repair, but the cost-savings is usually well worth it.

A few years ago, we began offering a new program to allow first-time boat owners to make the investment, but minimize the out of pocket expense.  Our alternative plan had to allow the owner to use the boat themselves but share in the profits if they allow the vessel to remain in our rental fleet.  We designed our leaseback program with just that purpose in mind.  You can own a luxury houseboat yourself and have the opportunity to profit as well.  The boat is managed and maintained by our professional staff and you can have the boat for more than a month each year!   If you’d like to consider the advanages of houseboat ownership with the potential to profit, check out the leaseback program here.

Think about how great you’ll feel with the freedom of the open water on a vessel of your own.  If you are considering boat ownership or know someone who might be, feel free to connect with us via email or facebook.

Have you submitted your houseboat video?

We’re extending the deadline for all video submissions to November 30th, so get them in befre the final vote on December 6th.  We’ll announce the winner on the Captain’s Blog, on facebook, and of course, on YouTube!  Check out the lastest entries and upload yours and send us the link.  Remember to keep it clean, but get those epic houseboat adventures submitted before its too late!

Remember to keep it clean and creative and no videos of anyone jumping off the roof of our houseboats will be aired!  Sorry guys, its a policy.

How does Shasta ‘stack up’?

The other day, as I was scouring the office for something (to be honest, I don’t remember what it was) and I found an old document that had some interesting statistics on Shasta Dam and Shasta Lake, which I thought were just too good not to share.

Shasta Dam is 47 feet higher than the Washington Monument.

The spillway is three times as high as Niagara Falls, water cascading 460 feet when spilling over the crest, and creating the world’s highest man-made waterfall.

The two turbines now installed in Shasta Power Plant use 160 tons of water every second.

Thirteen hundred miles of one-inch cooling pipe embedded in Shasta Dam would extend from San Francisco to Chicago.

Shasta Dam contains enough cement to fill a trainload 215 mile long or about as far as from Shasta Dam to San Francisco.

Shasta Dam contains enough concrete to construct a three foot sidewall around the world at the equator 4 inches thick.

Shasta Dam contains enough sand and gravel to fill 244,000 railroad cars or a railroad train 2,080 miles long extending from San Francisco to Chicago.

Shasta Dam is as high as the combined height of the Great Pyramid of Cheops and Niagara Falls.

Shasta Dam contains twice the volume of material fo the Great Pyramid of Cheops, one of the seven wonders of the world.

Shasta Dam contains enough steel in the form of reinforcement, gates, valves, conduits, penstocks, etc., to construct a flotilla comprising one Essex class carrier, and four modern destroyers.

There is enough steel in the 5 penstocks alone to construct three modern destroyers.

Shasta Reservoir, when full, will contain one trillion four hundred seventy billion, one hundred fifty million gallons of water, or more than 10,000 gallons (equivalent to one and a half railroad tank cars) for each U.S. inhabitant.

The lake when filled weighs six and one quarter billion tons.

Shasta Dam in volume contains approximately twice the volume of concrete of Boulder Dam or one half the volume of Grand Coulee Dam.

Royal Couple to Visit Lake Shasta?

Two weeks ago Jones Valley Resort and houseboats.com was selected by California Tourism to represent Northern California Houseboating in the lastest VisitCalifornia.com promotional video : Royal Summer in California!  I had the amazing opportunity to help coordinate the event here on Shasta and drive the houseboat that was filled with actors, directors, video producers, makeup crew and everyone else who helped in the production!  There were nearly forty people involved in the production which you can see below.  All the time and energy that went into it for a precious few seconds of houseboat glory, but it was well worth it.

The crew from Beef Films, a Southern California video production company were fantastic!  They made us ‘rookies’ of video feel comfortable and got in a few laughs.  Thanks to Lynn, John, Nick and all of the rest of your team.  The end product is amazing.  The video captures the majestic peaks of Mount Shasta, our houseboats on Shasta Lake, the California Coast, and much more.  Check out the video and start making a list of all the other places you might not have been in California.  And then go!  I know I just added a few…

As part of this fantastic promotion, Visit California.com is giving away an 8 day, 7 night California Vacation.  Check out more on this fantastic offer from California Tourism and continue to explore the greatest state in the country, California!

Boats, Dads, and memories

I met with a great guy some time ago who gave me an ear-to-ear grin when he found out I work for a houseboat company. “I used to go fishing with my Dad all the time on a houseboat” he recalled, looking into the air as if to search for a memory, “We would fish all night, waterski all day and had a blast. I should really take my kids.”  He continue with how much he missed spending time with his boys, now off to college and his daughter who was 16 and spending time with her was more of a chore than an experience.  His stories of fishing in the moonlight, catching catfish and how much he missed his father, who has since past away, reminded me of the special moments I spend with my kids.  Memories created on a houseboat last a lifetime.

Here are a few stories told by Dad’s:

My family’s house boating history dates back to my father who always enjoyed camping and house boating with friends.  He always had fond memories of house boating and wanted his kids to experience the same joy he felt as a child.  It’s always enjoyable relaxing and being surrounded by great company.  A house boat provides a great outdoor experience that is fun and safe for all ages.  Our house boat vacation consists of 3-4 families where we have cook-offs and theme parties throughout our four night stay on the lake.  In addition to our theme parties, we have game nights and poker nights that are a lot of fun as well.  All the guests put a tremendous amount of effort in to preparing a delicious array of meats, salads, and hors d’ oeuvres.  The meals range from Tri-tips, ribs, chicken, pork chops, hamburgers, sausages and anything else that would entice someone to join the party.  There are also great fruit salads, appetizers, side dishes and delicious cold beverages prepared too.

We are the Ritter clan. We began houseboating on New Melones 4 years ago, and continue to come back every year. Houseboating has been a journey of awakening to nature and its beauty, along with great fun and bonding with friends and family. Our first year we nestled in a cove for the first night. It was beautiful and peaceful. As we watched the fish jump from the lake we caught our first glimpse of a family of Bald Eagles. We were so excited, every member of our party sat on the top deck and watched them as the dun went down. It was so quiet and we had never seen so many stars. In the morning we took our coffee on deck and sure enough the mother bird was in the tree feeding her young. It was so quiet as we plopped our fishing rods over the side. We actually caught our first fish that morning.Every year we experience something new and wondrous on the lake.  It truly is a vacation experience you will remember for years to come. Our fondest memories come from our trips on the House Boat. We can’t wait to come back this summer!

You get to know your parents in a different way when you spend a few days on a houseboat…you might hear them tell of a family story that’d never been heard before, learn a family recipe that had long since been forgotten but was revived for the occasion, or learn how to fish – at 40.  And it may sound funny, but, my Dad enjoyed his beer…and there is no better place to kick back AND kick back a few beers than on a houseboat. For some reason it just tastes better ice cold out of the cooler. You just never know what the experience will bring, but it will surely be something special and remembered for many years to come!

Some of my fondest memories of my dad are from fishing, canoeing and this past year, houseboating.  I had the blessed opportunity to take my Dad out last August, we had a blast.  We fished, told stories, and cracked jokes.  I’ll always treasure my memories with my dad and I can only hope that someday, my little ones will have the same experience.

Memorial Day Houseboating Adventures

On a day that we remember our military heros, our veterans of today, those fallen, and even the future generations that will protect our country on battlefields that we have yet to undertake, I would like to start off by saying “Thank you.”  You are what makes America great.

This holiday, while you are out on the lake, here are a few cool ideas to share as we celebrate our freedom:

Go Boating

You had to know I’d say that, right?  Well, in every American war we relied on our nautical expertise to defend our wonderful land of freedom, so why not celebrate by jumping an awesome wake at 40 miles per hour?  We love boats in this country, all kinds of boats.  Speed boats, jet skis, submarines, yachts, and of course, houseboats.  Nothing says freedom like a boat.

Wear the Flag loud and proud

The American Flag is a symbol of freedom.  Wear a bandana, T-shirt or even decorate your boat in our Country’s magnificent colors.

Campfire Stories

After you’ve tied up to shore, building a campfire is a great way to entice your crew to join in and tell stories.  If anyone in the group is a veteran, ask them to share their memories, you’ll be surprised by what you hear.

Watch a War Movie

If you are anything like me, you’ve spent time ‘researching’ our military history through watching movies.  Films like “Saving Private Ryan,” “Pearl Harbor,” and “Band of Brothers” can pump blood through your veins as you celebrate our amazing history.  For the classics, see ”Tora! Tora! Tora!” “The Longest Day” “Patton” or “M.A.S.H”(I know it isn’t a movie, but it was more than just a TV show).

Memorial Day is a wonderful opportunity to teach the next generation about our great country’s military history.  Tell them what you believe it means to be a hero, who your favorite hero is and spend a little time remembering them this weekend.

Ziploc Omelets | Awesome houseboating recipe

Tired of everyone complaining that they want their ‘own omelet’ and end up having to make fifteen different omelets only to discover that you forgot to add tomatoes to Tom’s or added onions to Julie’s and she hates onions?  Fear not, we’ve got you covered with a great recipe that is both fun and complaint-free!

This recipe is good when you’re alone or when all your family is together. Have everyone write their name on a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag with permanent marker.
- Crack 2 eggs into the quart size Ziploc bag (or 5-6 egg whites if you are the Captain) shake to combine them
- Put out a variety of ingredients such as: cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.
- Each guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shake.
- Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up.

- Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for approximately 13 minutes . You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water.

- Cut the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared for everyone to be amazed.

- Nice to serve with fresh fruit and coffee cake; everyone gets involved in the process and a great conversation piece.

Imagine having these ready the night before, and putting the bag in boiling water while you get ready. And in 13 minutes, you have a nice omelet for a quick breakfast!!!

Keep Smiling,

Kevin

Special thanks to Kevin Silver, a loyal houseboats.com patron, who submitted this wonderful recipe.  To submit your own recipe ideas, email the Captain or comment below

Why Shasta Lake is unusually warm | Shasta Lake Water Temperature

Checking the water temperature at Shasta Lake at Jones Valley Resort

A fairly common misconception about Shasta Lake is that the water temperature is chilly, similar to most lakes throughout California.  ”It’s cold there like Tahoe, right?” we hear pretty often.  Most people are shocked when we tell them that the water temperature on the lake can get into the high seventies and even the eighties during the summer months.  But why?  This article is dedicate to the discovery of why Shasta Lake water temperature is above normal for California Lakes and what makes it such a desirable vacation destination.

First, the lake isn’t filled primarily with snowmelt, like many lakes are throughout the western United States, but its receives the majority of its volume from rainfall and inflows from the 4 rivers or ‘arms’ that fill it.  In fact, according to the Bureau of Reclamation, it is filled by ninety percent rainfall and ten percent snowmelt. The Sacramento River, McCloud River, Squaw River and Pit River all join together to create Shasta Lake, which was dammed up to prevent downstream flooding.  Because the water comes from rainfall, it is naturally warmer coming into the lake.

Rain or snow?
Because Shasta Lake is filled with rainfall, not from snowpack, it is much more difficult to regulate.  This unpredictability is part of the reason the lake is often below full capacity, to prevent flooding.  For more on the lake level, see http://houseboats.com/2011/01/epic-water-levels-why-shasta-lake-filled-in-2010/

Secondly, the Redding area is a valley protected by mountain ranges, creating a uniquely warm environment.  The topography of the Shasta Lake region is quite fascinating, with an elevation of only 1000 feet with mountain ranges Shasta, Lassen and Trinity surrounding the lake, creating a perfect environment for storing heat during the summer.

Interestingly, neither the elevation nor the heat is detrimental to the surrounding pine trees, normally seen in cooler climates.  Once the prevailing winds of late spring bring in the warmer temperatures, the area is able to capture the warmth and quickly increase the water’s temperature.

Finally, Redding boasts the second highest percentage of sun exposure per daylight hour in the country.  According to a recent report by CurrentReport.com, Redding averages 88 percent sunshine, from sunrise to sunset.  With that much of the sun’s energy, the lake temperatures can change from a moderate mid-sixties to nearly eighty degrees in what seems like overnight.

A lake that can boast warm temperatures throughout the season makes Shasta one of California’s most extraordinary travel destinations.  Spring, summer, or fall, the uniquely warm temperatures of Shasta Lake create the perfect environment for world class fishing, watersports and houseboating.
